Scratch Patch is a Cape Town institution that has been delighting families for decades. The concept is wonderfully simple: you buy a small bag or cup, then settle in among floors literally covered in thousands of tumble-polished gemstones, scratching through them to collect your favourites until your bag is full. Tiger's eye, rose quartz, amethyst, agate and jasper are all there to be found, and the activity is as calming for grown-ups as it is exciting for children. Bags start from around R30-R35 for a small size, with larger options for those who want to take home more treasure.
Beyond the scratching floor, the V&A Waterfront venue forms part of the wider Mineral World experience, with displays of crystals, fossils and minerals and an on-site shop selling gemstones, jewellery and curios. The attached Cave Golf course adds a themed mini-golf round, making it easy to turn a quick visit into a longer outing. It's all under cover, which makes Scratch Patch a reliable rainy-day or hot-day option right in the heart of the Waterfront.
Conveniently located in the Portswood Ridge precinct on Dock Road, near the Two Oceans Aquarium, Scratch Patch is open daily (roughly 09:00 to 17:00). With easy parking nearby and a price point that suits any budget, it remains one of the most accessible and genuinely fun things to do with kids on the Atlantic Seaboard. A sister branch operates at Dido Valley Road in Simon's Town.
